Easy access to most of South Florida from this central location. About a block from fishing or birding on Lake Olivia.
There are 2 bedrooms and a bath that are used for guests. If both room are occupied then the restroom is shared between them. For more privacy the entire space can be reserved in my other listing. There is a separate living room for guests that is open to the kitchen. Kitchen and laundry are available for use as well as porch swings and yard and a basketball hoop. Inside and outside areas for pets. There is also access to nearby Lake Olivia. We also have a few bikes. There are some accommodations for an infant.
There is generally someone home if you need anything and will provide any needed contact information. Having company or privacy is your choice.

This is a family farmhouse that is over 70 years old. Completed in 1943 on 5 acres of land by my great-grandfather, Cary Scott, with his two oldest sons and hired hands, this is a different model than a typical New England farmhouse; a one-story stucco house built low and cool to withstand Florida summers without air conditioning (don't worry, NOW it has central air conditioning).
*This house is pet-free. We do not host indoor or outdoor animals of any kind. We are also unable to host assistance cats or dogs due to allergies and asthma.*
The approach to the house is down a white-sand road between orange groves and pastures. With only one immediate neighbor, the house is private, peaceful and the area around is nearly silent. We hear animals and birds much more often than cars. The front yard of the house is shaded by three large live-oak trees draped with Spanish moss. The house has a large living/dining room, three bedrooms, fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, laundry room, bathroom with shower, and so on... but its crown jewel is the spacious screened porch.
My great-grandparents raised 11 kids in this house, and when I visited here as a child the house was always full of uncles and aunts, cousins and food. The house has stayed in the family over the decades, but fell into disrepair in the early part of the 2000s. With your help and that of other airbnb guests we’ve been able to restore and modernise it completely in 2018 with our own hands. We also did extensive landscaping (I'm now obsessed with Florida native plants). It remains quirky, historical, spacious and extremely cozy. We call it the Scott Family Homestead. Even though my last name isn't Scott, (mom married outside the family, thank goodness ;) people around here still call me Rachel Scott. So the house is keeping that name too.
In furnishing the house, we’ve kept much of the family furniture and mixed it with new finds. Our goal is that we, and you, feel at home but a world apart- away from daily stresses. For those coming from northern climates, central Florida is an oasis of warm and calm in the winter. We come here almost every year to recharge our batteries. This is a great place for couples, friends, or families, including babies and kids (we have them too!). Please be aware that this house is not baby-proofed (no outlet covers or cupboard locks) and we do not have a crib or a high-chair. But we'd be delighted to have babies here if you're fine with that.

The house as we have it set up easily hosts 7. It has no stairs in the front. The back door is reached by two shallow stairs.
The main room of the house is equipped with a large dining table, a living area with a luxuriously large sectional couch and a flat-screen tv. We don't have cable, and only get a few channels. A bamboo bluetooth/aux cable speaker allows you to attach any phone, mp3 player or laptop and play your own music.
The front bedroom has a double, the second a queen bed. Our favorite, in the middle bedroom, is a brand-new memory foam mattress. The third bedroom works well as a kids room, or a room for three adults, with one single bed and a set of bunk beds, and a selection of educational toys, books and puzzles from the '70s (think Fisher Price Record Player) to today. We've also stocked the living room bookcase with classics and modern novels from around the world, and a few biographies and useful reference books.
The kitchen is fully equipped with range, oven, full-sized refrigerator, dishwasher, blender, popcorn popper, dishes and utensils. You can easily (we've tested this) cook a feast for the extended family. My great-grandmother got up and made biscuits in this kitchen every single morning at 6 am before her 11 children woke up. We tend to get started later when we're here ;) and enjoy brunch on the front porch.
The back section of the house includes the bathroom and laundry room. It was an addition- when the house was built my family used an outhouse. The bathroom is tiled and has a spacious shower with a seat inside, and a space heater to keep it extra-cozy.
Speaking of heat- the house has central air and heat.
The house is surrounded by fruit trees. Mango, guava and citrus grow here in plenty, and we’ve planted pineapples too. My grandmother was fascinated by the “Lake Wales Ridge”, the unique ecosystem and native plants and animals of the immediate region around the house. The central ridge of Florida, the Lake Wales Ridge, was the only part of Florida that was above water 2 million years ago (look at the Lake Wales Ridge entry on wikipedia, it's fascinating). As a chain of islands, the area developed a unique ecosystem that still differentiates it from any other part of the world today. My grandmother gathered and planted many Lake Wales native plants during the time she lived at the house, some of which still flourish today and to which I've added (10 points if you can spot the bald cypress tree).
We don't allow pets or service animals, in or outside the house. Why? I'm very allergic to many animals, and so we decided to provide a pet-free space for me and others with similar allergies. But outside? Our land is home to the endangered Gopher Tortoise, which is frequently attacked by cats and dogs. So we're also doing all we can to make sure they're safe here.

Our land is home to the endangered Gopher Tortoise. There are burrows here right in our yard, and we’ve even seen babies, so we know they breed here. They are declining in numbers across their original habitat, so we’re eager to keep them safe and happy here- call it an unofficial Gopher Tortoise sanctuary. That’s one of the reasons no pets are allowed, as dogs and cats may attack their young, and their habitat needs guide our landscaping choices. It’s forbidden by law to touch or tamper with the tortoises or their burrows, which are home not only to them but to up to 350 other vital species in this unique ecosystem of Longleaf-Pine and Scrub Oak Forests, and it’s important to us that our guests know this. Your response:

I think old houses are really:
a) Beautiful. I love the way things used to be really built to last, and especially like the unique look that sets older houses apart from cookie-cutter homes often built these days.
b) just houses. I’m looking for a roof and four walls, are we good?
c) Dusty. I strongly dislike old houses, anything that isn’t straight or in a 90˚ angle, or that looks remotely dated, or not like an interior decoration TV show.
Security vs Freedom:
a) I long for places where people don’t feel the need to lock their doors and the neighbors look out for each other.
b) just don’t steal my stuff, ‘k?
c) give me a burglar alarm or give me death.
When I’m on vacation I want to:
a) Relax. Ideally i’d like a mix of activities and a green, quiet natural place to relax in at the end of each day.
b) have a comfortable place to sleep.
c) be where the party is at!
When on vacation I:
a) cook every day. I love to cook. Wouldn’t be a vacation without experimenting with new recipes. I need a fully equipped kitchen, not just a coffeepot and a microwave.
b) cook a little, go out to eat a little. Need to make coffee at home though, otherwise I can’t leave the house.
c) rely purely on room service. What could be better than fries and red wine in bed?
When getting into bed at night I love to have:
a) cotton sheets that have been used enough times to be truly soft. Bonus if the pattern is entertaining, like peace signs or a 70s floral design.
b) Clean sheets.
c) High-count Egyptian cotton, in starched hotel-white, with a mint on the pillow.
At the end of the day, the best way I can imagine to unwind is:
a) sitting under a sky full of sparkling stars and the sound of crickets.
b) watchin' TV on a comfy couch.
c) bumpin' beats and martinis made by a cute bartender.
My ideal accommodation is:

If you got mostly A’s, you will love it and must book immediately! There is no better place for you and no better guest for us, because you’ll appreciate exactly what we’ve got and won’t miss what we don’t have. We are a perfect love match.

If you got many or mostly C’s, you might want to consider a commercial vacation rental or a hotel. This place is safe, pretty and clean, but it’s not standardized, the furniture doesn’t all match, and it’s definitely not five-star.
If you got a mix of A’s, B’s and C’s, you’d be welcome here. Because, we also like five star accommodation (in theory at least), and would definitely eat french fries in bed. But red wine in bed seems like it might get messy. Anyway, as long as you realize what we’re offering and are into that, we’d be happy to have you.
The house sits on 2.5 acres that you are welcome to use. There are several Gopher Tortoise burrows around the house- these endangered turtles are not remotely scared of us and are extremely entertaining as they march from one burrow to another to visit each other. Please be sure not to disturb them, or their burrows- this is extremely illegal, not to mention unkind. And enjoy the show!
We don't live nearby, but have a close friend and co-host, Ruth, available in town should you need help. Otherwise you won't see us, but we'll only be a phone call away if you have questions.
Wherever you’re coming from, this is an ideal combination of retreat and launchpad. It feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere- the stars are amazing. In truth, it’s 10 minutes drive to the next town, Avon Park, equipped with restaurants, groceries, and any other necessities, and a charming historic downtown area.
THE ULTIMATE 5-DAY AFFORDABLE AND AMAZING FAMILY VACATION IN FLORIDA
Since I've spent a lot of time here with my children, I wanted to share my dream vacation if I only had five days to spend here.
Flying into Orlando? Consider spending one night there and visiting Disney, Epcot, Sea World or or or or, before driving the 1.5 hours to Avon park and basking in the huge sky full of stars. But we won't count that as one of the 5 days.
Monday/Day 1: Arrive anytime after 3 pm (check with us if you'd like an earlier check in, it's often possible) and check yourself in with the lockbox. Take the kids swimming in the lake at Donaldson Park, Avon Park, a 9 minute car ride. Then grab DELICIOUS tacos at La Yerbita, Main Street, Avon Park (all these locations are listed in our Guide Book, if you need addresses.) Grab some groceries at Walmart, Aldi or Publix and head home.
Tuesday/Day 2: You just arrived so you want a day with something for everyone: go to Bok Tower Gardens! This is a beautiful and huge garden with a gorgeous view across the state (one of the highest points in central Florida). It's a great place for a picnic, or eat in the surprisingly yummy and reasonably priced restaurant. Highlight: they have a CRAZY good playground, and I don't say that lightly. Includes a water-playground, a dress up area (with stage!), a crafts area and hammocks for the parents. :) Entrance to the park: Adults $14, Children (5-12) $5, Children ages 5 and under are FREE. This is 43 minutes from our house (according to a certain maps website).
Wednesday/Day 3: If you're up for some more action after beauty of Bok Tower, make this day a wet'n'wild one: got to LEGOLAND Florida (which includes a water park)! Your kids will pee themselves, in a good way! It's a relaxed 45 minute drive away.
Thursday/Day 4: Tired? You deserve to recharge. :) Spend today at Highlands Hammock State Park and Spa. (Did she say State Park AND Spa? I'll explain.) This one is even closer, 26 min away. You know that one parent that is extra stressed today? Maybe had to get up in the night with a kid, or is working via email and cranky about it? Give them just what they need today. You take a hike with the kids (short or long, you choose) or take a fully accessible Tram ride through this 9000 acre park which includes cypress swamp, \"old-growth hammock and thousand year old oaks. Ferns and air plants are abundant. Black bear and the Florida panther tread softly through the hammock and may be glimpsed occasionally.\" (- Florida State Parks website). Meanwhile, that other parent (or maybe it's you?) heads to The Spa at Hammock Falls, (5 min from Park). They do massages, salt scrubs and water treatments, facials and mani/pedis in a small town atmosphere, with big city excellence and style. I can personally attest to their amazingness. They have this shower thing with 7 shower heads, and you lay under it and feel like a deity. Yesssssss....
For dinner go to the Faded Bistro and Beer Garden on your way home. It's amazing, whether you want ribs, a huge burger, some organic wine or craft beer, or a wicked vegan buddha bowl. Seriously, I'm obsessed with this place.
Friday/Day 4: \"Do\" Avon Park. This is actually a really charming and quaint little town. Start with the Avon Park Depot Museum- back in the twenties when this place was booming, this was our own little train station- now it's a museum about the town, and it's free, open Wed-Fri for very brief hours (i think 11-2, but better check). Check out the cinder-block press donated by my Great-Grandpa, Cary Scott- it was used to make all the bricks that make up your current home-away-from-home.
Walk (or drive, but it ain't far) to the Jacaranda Hotel and stroll through the grandiose lobby. Show your kids what telephones and elevators used to look like, and then wander through the attached atrium full of local businesses (including an art gallery). For the most authentic experience, either enjoy the buffet lunch at the Jacaranda or walk across the street to The Depot Restaurant, where charming ladies with tall hair will bring seriously traditional southern food before you finish ordering. If you want even more southern flair, drive over to the very center of downtown Sebring, the next town, and grab some homemade ice cream on circle park drive. Eat it one of the clean, well kept benches on the circular square (?) that is the old downtown's heart. Then visit two of my favorite shops in Sebring, both for used stuff: The Habitat Restore Thrift-Shop (vintage for a good cause, anyone?) or the Sebring Friends of the Library Bookshop (a great literary collection, most finds under $1!). Both are in easy walking distance. Pack up your new treasures and head home. Turn your kids out in the yard to play with their new 80s toys. Vacation should be a vacation for you, too. ;)
Saturday/Day 5: If you're lucky, there's a cool and child-friendly show on at the Alan Jay Wildstein Center for the Performing Arts, part of the South Florida State College in Avon Park. You rock, so you checked this out and got tickets before your trip. Whether this worked out or not, Saturday is also a great day for a picnic. Pick something yummy, eat it in the screen porch, and look out through the live oaks and spanish moss. It's fairly likely a gopher tortoise will bop across the yard, or a scrub jay alight on our feeder (both endangered species, so enjoy the rare view!). Remember what vacation is all about- slowing down. Being together. Spending hours that you'll never forget. And going back refreshed.
Sunday/Day 6- Farewell! Check out by 11 (may be flexible on some dates, ask if you need a later check-out) and please, come back and see us again!
The easiest way to get here is to drive, or fly into Orlando, Sanford, Tampa or St. Petersburg and rent a car. That also opens up a myriad of options in the area.
Weird but True things about our House
We renovated like crazy this year, but had to save some special \"quirks\" for phase two. Here are some, so you know before you come:
The electrical outlet in the bathroom is linked to the light switch. If you want to charge your toothbrush in there, gotta leave the light on.
There is a TV but NO CABLE. Just an antennae and not a lot of channels.
The back door is a storm door that closes with a hook only. There is another, more solid lockable-with-a-key door between the back entrance and the bedrooms.
WiFi has moods, and doesn't like cloudy weather. Don't plan to do your beefiest downloads/uploads here.
The shower faucets are seriously 50s. Which can be a bug or a feature, your call.
There is one pump for the whole house, so expect the water pressure to vary unless you're here alone. Maybe even then. (Water ghosts?)
The central heating and air doesn't have any ducts to the bathroom (I don't know why) so this room is usually cooler in winter and warmer in summer. We supply a space heater to keep it cozy in the winter.
We have a TV antenna which gets a limited number of channels.")

There are three main bedrooms and a TV room that can become a room as well. The living room has a futon bed as well. New queen beds, bunk bed, futons, mattresses, and linens. New wood flooring in the main space and new carpet in the bedrooms. Fully stocked kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and pots/pans/utensils/dishes/cutlery/etc. There is a laundry room in the carport area where you can wash/dry your clothes and linens. You can park your car in the carport and there's space on the driveway for other cars as well. If you have more than 3 cars, let us know and we can have you park at our other house.
You get the whole house to yourselves and can check-in on your own. We have a family member who lives close by in case you need anything. The house is lake front with a shared dock (you share the dock and lakefront with our other airbnb house that is right next door). Take a swim in the beautiful water OR canoe around the lake OR take a walk around the lake (about 1 mile).
